Two people have died from injuries they received Sunday when two motorcycles collided with a car in Stephenville.

Timothy Cunningham, 29, of Stephenville, died 8:25 p.m. Tuesday at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth where he was taken by helicopter ambulance following the collision.

Lora Wulfjen, 18, of Breckenridge, died at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday, also at JPS.

Four other people were hurt in the wreck that happened at 9:50 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of West Washington and North Dale streets, Stephenville Police Chief Roy Halsell said.

Wulfjen, a first-year student at Tarleton State University, joined classmate Julie Ohnemus, 17, of Waltham, Mass., for a brief ride on motorcycles owned by Cunningham, Halsell said.

“They were just acquaintances,” Halsell said of the students and the men. “From what I understand, they had just met the night before.

“Both girls were freshmen at Tarleton. They hadn’t even been in school a week.”

The women rode on the back of the motorcycles, Halsell said. One was ridden by Cunningham, the other by his friend, 21-year-old Apollo Long, Halsell said.

None of them, he added, wore helmets.

The motorcycles were westbound on Washington Street, Halsell said. The two men were taking the women back to where one of them had parked her truck, he said.

A 1994 Geo Prizm, which carried a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, turned in front of the motorcycles and collided with them, Halsell said.

Cunningham and Wulfjen were on the same motorcycle, Halsell said.

Long was treated and released at Harris Methodist Erath County Hospital, but Ohnemus was taken to Harris Methodist Fort Worth hospital, where she was listed in fair condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

No citations were issued by Wednesday, and the wreck was still under investigation, Halsell said.

STEPHENVILLE — Just days into her freshman year at Tarleton State University, Lora Lee Wulfjen of Breckenridge has lost her life in a two-vehicle collision.

Wulfjen, 18, died at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, the result of injuries she received when the motorcycle on which she was riding collided with a car Sunday night at the intersection of West Washington and North Dale streets in Stephenville.

The driver of that motorcycle — 29-year-old Timothy Cunningham of Hico — died at 8:25 p.m. Tuesday at the same Fort Worth hospital, Stephenville Police Chief Roy Halsell said Wednesday.

According to police reports, a 1994 Geo Prizm driven by a 16-year-old boy pulled into the path of Cunningham’s motorcycle. The investigation continues, Halsell said.

A second motorcycle, driven by Apollo Long, 21, and traveling near Cunningham’s motorcycle, also crashed into the car.

Wulfjen’s TSU classmate, Julie Ohnemus, 17, of Waltham, Mass., was riding on the back of Long’s motorcycle, police said.

Ohnemus was in fair condition at Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital on Wednesday.

Long was treated and released at Harris Methodist Erath County Hospital.

Wulfjen, Cunningham, Ohnemus and Long were not wearing helmets, Halsell said.
